Serious Medical Condition May Be Masquerading as Age Spots

To the untrained eye, a brownish circle on the hand of a man in his 60s may appear to be nothing more than an age spot or other unwanted, but harmless, sign of aging. Dermatologists want people to know that some signs and symptoms associated with aging skin indicate an underlying medical condition. That rough, reddish patch on the face could be more than sun-drenched dry skin. An age spot that grows, flattens, darkens, and becomes irregularly shaped may not be an age spot. It could be skin cancer.

To learn more about signs of aging that can indicate an underlying medical condition and to see if you can tell whether the spots on a person's hand are really age spots or something else, visit the following pages.

If after reading the preceding information, you think you may have "spots" that are more than just pigmentation, don't wait to make an appointment. Early detection of skin cancer could save your life. If your spots are determined to be only "spots", there are many methods Dr. Pilest can use to remove or lighten them.

We keep urging you to protect yourself from the sun. Yet we're all attuned to the idea that a tan makes us look healthy. However, what's going on underneath that "healthy tan" is another story. Take a look at what the sun can "do" for you over time.

    Velasmooth for Cellulite

For years women have been trying to solve the problem of cellulite. It's a merciless condition that picks on just about all women..thin, plump, exercise aficionados, runners, new moms, old moms...pick one of us at any age and invariably there's some areas on our body that ripple and dimple and just refuse to smooth out no matter what we do!

But finally we've got a fighting chance. Last month the FDA approved Velasmooth for the reduction of cellulite. Using dual energy sources - radio frequency to tighten tissue and infrared light to heat the targeted areas - along with suction manipulation to insure consistent application of both energies, Velasmooth goes far beyond traditional "massage" attempts to eliminate stubborn fat cells. It sounds like a lot's going on at once...and there is. That's the reason it works.

Boost results by combining mesotherapy, a French-inspired body contouring procedure that helps the body get rid of fat in the places you want to get rid of it.

As an introductory special to our patients, we're offering 20% off. Read about how Velasmooth works and then bring in the attached coupon below for your special pricing.

If you had to miss it, we'll be scheduling another seminar soon. Put yourself on our call list and we'll let you know when the next seminar is on the calendar.

Add me to the Seminar call list or call the office at 1-800-838-4936 and we'll add your name and contact info to the list for you.

Need skin care advice? Have a problem you don't know what to do about? Confused about what you read or see on TV? This is the place to ask. Get the Facts.

    A reader asks:

Is it true that hemorrhoid creams can be applied to the eye area? What is the effect? Is it just to reduce puffiness? Or does it also help diminish fine lines?

    Dr. Pilest:

They work as a moisturizer, but aren't effective in resolving puffiness...which is an accumulation of water in the tissues. Hemorrhoid creams are designed to temporarily shrink capillaries in mucous membranes, not remove fluid retention under the eyes. You can use them and they probably won't hurt (though the smell isn't all that great), but they won't remove wrinkles or help puffy eyes.

If you have a problem with eye puffiness and you know it is not allergy-related, try sleeping with your head slightly elevated. Also, avoiding alcohol and salty foods will cut down on fluid retention.

    Hyperhidrosis - Excessive Sweating

We've had really hot weather lately and with the heat comes the sweat. But some people suffer year round with excessive, embarrassing sweating that's not caused by heat, but by a medical condition called Hyperhidrosis.

This condition, a result of overactive sweat glands in the armpits, the soles of the feet and the palms of the hands can have profound psychological effects. Usually even the strongest antiperspirant makes little or no difference and the hyperhidrosis sufferer struggles to hide the condition.

Botox, most widely known for its use in relaxing facial wrinkles, is an FDA approved treatment for severe sweating. It has other medical uses as well and has been effective in a number of conditions.

By placing tiny injections into the overactive sweat glands, Dr. Pilest can help reduce and minimize the uncomfortable and embarrassing effects of hyperhidrosis.

If you or a family member suffers with hyperhidrosis, there are solutions.
