    Gentle Skin Resurfacing - Fraxel

What new breakthrough Laser technology gives quick dramatic results in skin resurfacing without the pain and downtime?

Fraxel. Reliant Technologies' Fractional Laser Resurfacing (Fraxel) is a new FDA-approved technology which can deliver results very similar to those of deep chemical peels or ablative laser resurfacing, without the discomfort or prolonged healing period, and with a minimum of risk.

    How?
Fractional Laser Resurfacing treats a small "fraction" of the skin at a time, leaving intact, undamaged skin around each tiny micro-sized treated area to maintain the integrity of the skin's protective barrier and speed healing and results.

The Fraxel Laser does not remove skin, but produces thousands of tiny treatment zones in the skin known as "microthermal treatment zones" (MTZs). This safe and gradual laser procedure stimulates the body to replace aged and photo- damaged skin.

By treating a fraction of the skin's surface at a time, FRAXEL(TM) Laser Treatment provides the positive results of traditional skin resurfacing without the down time and risks. Because the treated microzones are surrounded by larger areas of healthy tissue, healing is extemely fast with minimal initial redness or swelling (usually no more than that of a mild sunburn).

Need skin care advice? Have a problem you don't know what to do about? Confused about what you read or see on TV? This is the place to ask. Get the Facts.

    A reader asks:
I have redness from acne and large open pores. How do I get rid of the redness without side effects and without changing the color of my skin? And how can I make the pores smaller?

    Dr. Pilest:
Residual redness from acne scars is very successfully treated using the Vbeam laser. Fotofacial is helpful for skin tone and making pores appear smaller. If oiliness is a problem, the laser treatments and if indicated, Photo Dynamic Therapy, will both shrink the pores and diminish the oil gland activity.

Anyone with acne or acne scars should treat their skin gently. No amount of scrubbing or rubbing will help. In fact, that will only make your skin respond with more redness and oil. Professional treatment is your best option for resolving these problems, but if that is not an option, a soothing cleanser, mild non-alcohol toner and an oil- free moisturizer are your basics.

    Acne and Milk Connection

A recent study by Dr Jerome Fisher has shown that there may be a direct connection between consumption of milk and some milk products and acne.

In a clinical study of 1,088 teenage patients over 10 years Dr. Fisher reported to the American Dermatological Association that milk was a principal contributor to some patients' acne. Dr. Fisher found that their acne tapered off as their milk consumption was reduced.

Dairy products often contain large amounts of butterfat and milk sugar, both of which, he believed, aggravate acne. He also suspected that the hormones produced naturally in the milk of pregnant cows may break down into androgen when consumed, which stimulates the production of sebum, the waxy substance secreted by the sebaceous glands that clogs pores and creates acne when the pores become infected.

Milk may also contain excessive amounts of iodine, which can irritate pores, bringing on acne flare-ups. Iodine gets into the milk through the use of contaminated milking equipment and medication given to the cows.

Another study listed what are believed to be the biggest offenders:

    • Skim Milk (more than other forms of milk)
    • Cottage Cheese
    • Cream Cheese
    • Instant Breakfast Drinks

If you choose to restrict milk intake, it is recommended that you increase other calcium-rich foods
